Volunteering Opportunities for Young People

Young volunteers

Young people have lots to offer local groups and organisations. It is a great way to get involved in your local community as well as learning new skills and being able to add to your CV.

It can, however, be a little harder to find a volunteering opportunity as lots of organisations are not able to recruit volunteers under 18. But the good news is that there are plenty of places to try.

Here are a few ideas:

Local Organisations in Baildon

Some local organisations in Baildon welcome younger volunteers or family groups to help with their work.

Baildon Golf Club are looking for someone to help manage their social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Content will be provided but they would also welcome new ideas.

Litter Free Baildon welcomes family groups and younger volunteers to help tidy up the local community.

Shipley Glen Tramway also welcomes volunteer family groups and young people aged 14 plus to get involved in all of the roles (except driving) central to running the attraction on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Salvation Army in Shipley are currently recruiting upcycling volunteers with a passion for recycling and creating garments from clothes that might not be fit for re sale. This role can be carried out at home and all materials are provided.

Wesleys are looking for a young helper to wait on tables and to take orders on Saturday mornings between 9am and 12pm (all or part of the hours). They would like someone with a friendly disposition who is not phased by working in a high pressure environment.

Barnardo's in Forster Square in Bradford have a number of opportunities for young people from age 14+ including:

  • Customer Support Volunteers,
  • Department Support Volunteer (Clothing - Online),
  • Warehouse Assistant Volunteer - Retail

Oxfam welcome students looking for placements, including for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

The St Johns Ambulance Service recruit cadets aged 11-17 to learn first-aid skills and how to save lives.

BCB Radio (Bradford Community Broadcasting) welcome a wide range of diverse volunteers to get involved in delivering the radio service, as broadcasters or station managers.

Virtual Volunteering

There are lots of organisations that use online volunteers in a range of different ways including befriending, campaigning and undertaking digital tasks. You can do this from the comfort of your own home and at a time to suit you.

Youth Employment UK and Vinspired have details of online volunteering opportunities for young people in the UK.

Bookmark have opportunities for people to get involved as online reading mentors for young children.

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) are looking for volunteers to help with their conservation work by tagging animals online as part of their Instant Wild project.

Young volunteers can also support different causes by playing games online with organisations such as Free Rice where every correct quiz answer generates 10 grains of rice for the UN World Food Programme.
