Shipley Glen Tramway

The Tramway opens from 12pm until 4pm on Sundays only from January until Easter, and both Saturdays and Sundays from Easter until Christmas

There are lots of different ways that you can get involved with Shipley Glen Tramway as a volunteer:

  • Greeters

The primary role of the greeter is to load passengers, pushchairs and wheelchairs safely onto the trams and transmit the safety instructions to the customers. Greeters operate at both the top and bottom station.

  • Dispatcher

The dispatcher has responsibility for the safe running of the bottom station, consulting with the driver when satisfied the bottom tram is safe to run and observing the trams and tracks during running.

  • Driver

As well as driving the tram from the top station, the driver has overall responsibility for the safe running of the tram, including pre-operational safety tests.

  • Ticket Sellers

Tickets and a few other items are sold from the bottom station. Ticket sellers check their float, sell tickets etc as required and make sure the float and till balance at the end of the day.

  • Shop Assistant

The shop is situated at the top station. As well as tickets, an array of sweets and other goods are sold. The basic role is the same as the ticket sellers.

  • Information Centre

The information centre is situated below the bottom station. The role is to supervise members of the public who visit. Children's activities are often provided, especially on notable occasions.

  • Maintenance

The maintenance team meets every Tuesday morning (weather permitting) and conducts all aspects of maintenance, which don't require specialist input, on the tracks and trams, and in the stations and information centre. Many skills and expertise sets are welcome.

  • Gardener

We have a small garden area at the top station, and troughs and tubs at both stations. These require planting and replanting, weeding and tidying. These tasks can be carried out at times to suit the volunteer.

  • Housekeeper

The role of the housekeeper is to keep the stations clean and tidy, including the toilets and kitchen and to audit and order supplies. These tasks can be carried out at times to suit the volunteer.

  • Social Media

This is a new role. We have Facebook and X accounts which require an administrator. These tasks can be carried out at times to suit the volunteer.

How often do I volunteer?

Volunteers tend to do a minimum of one shift per month, but some do more. Volunteers start 30 minutes before the tramway opens and are usually finished by 4.15pm.

What training is provided?

Full training covering a number of sessions alongside one of our trainers is given.
